Youth Football Uniform Sizing Guide

Ordering youth football uniforms for the first time? The surprise most coaches hit is that youth football uniform sizes don’t behave like regular kids’ clothes — shoulder pads change every measurement. This guide shows you how to measure each player, pick sizes that actually fit on game day, and avoid the sizing mistakes that turn into expensive reorders.
Why youth football sizing goes wrong more than any other sport
Three things conspire against you. First, shoulder pads add real bulk — a kid with a 30-inch chest can measure 33 or 34 inches with pads on, which is a full size jump. Second, kids this age grow in spurts, and a jersey that fit in August can be snug by October. Third, well-meaning parents order big so their kid can “grow into it,” and the result is a jersey that hangs past the pads and sleeves that swallow elbows.
A jersey that’s too big isn’t just sloppy — it’s a competitive problem. Loose fabric is easier for defenders to grab, and long sleeves restrict a quarterback’s throwing motion and a receiver’s hands. Fit matters in football in a way it doesn’t in most youth sports.
How do you measure a kid for a football jersey?
Have the player put on their shoulder pads and a practice shirt, then measure around the fullest part of the chest, over the pads. That number — not their t-shirt size — is what you match to the size chart. Also measure shoulder width, seam to seam across the pads, so you know the jersey won’t pull at the shoulders when they raise their arms.
Write down every player’s name, chest-over-pads measurement, and chosen size on one sheet. You’ll thank yourself later when it’s time to reorder or add a player mid-season.
What size football jersey should my 10-year-old wear?
Age charts are a starting point, not an answer. A 10-year-old can weigh 70 pounds or 110 pounds, and those two kids wear very different jerseys. Go by the chest-over-pads measurement every time.
When a player lands between sizes, here’s the rule: if the smaller size pulls across the shoulders or rides up when they lift their arms with pads on, go up. If it fits with pads and just feels roomy, stay. Err toward the fit that works with pads on, because that’s the only fit that matters on the field.
How do you measure for youth football pants?
Measure the waist where the belt will sit, and the inseam from crotch to just below the knee. The key detail: measure with the girdle on. Football pants are worn over a girdle holding thigh and knee pads, which adds bulk at the hips and thighs just like shoulder pads do up top.
Pants should end just below the knee with the knee pads in place. Too long and the fabric bunches behind the knee; too short and the knee pads peek out.
Should you size up so they can “grow into it”?
Almost never. This is the single most expensive mistake in youth football ordering. An oversized jersey gets grabbed by defenders, an oversized pant bunches and slides, and the kid spends the season uncomfortable. One season in a jersey that fits right beats a season swimming in fabric.
The one exception: if a player is genuinely between sizes, growing fast, and the season is months away, going up one size in pants is lower-risk than in a jersey. Pants have belts and drawstrings. Jerseys don’t forgive.
Collect every size before you order — the reorder trap
Here’s the mistake that actually costs money: ordering for 14 players, then realizing two weeks later you missed two kids. A small second order ships separately and costs more per set than getting it right the first time. Our minimum order is 10 sets, which covers most youth teams with room for spares — but only if you collect sizes up front.
Run a 15-minute sizing session at practice. Two parents, one tape measure, one clipboard. Measure every player in pads and girdle, record it, and order once.

FAQ
What size jersey does a 10-year-old wear in football?
There’s no single answer — measure the chest over shoulder pads and match it to the size chart. Most 10-year-olds land in youth medium or large depending on build, but the tape measure beats the age chart every time.
Do youth football jerseys run big?
They’re cut to fit over shoulder pads, so they look big lying flat. With pads on, the fit is right. Always measure with pads to judge the real fit.
How long does it take to get custom youth football uniforms?
Standard turnaround is 10–14 business days after you approve the design. Rush options are available if you’re up against opening day.
What is the minimum order for youth football uniforms?
10 sets. That covers most youth teams with a spare or two — just make sure you’ve collected every player’s size before ordering.
